Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman. As a member of the First Triumvirate, Caesar led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars and defeated his political rival Pompey in the Civil War. He then became dictator from 49 BC until his assassination in 44 BC. He played a critical role in the events that led to the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.

David is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance sculpture, created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. David was the first colossal marble sculpture to be created in the early modern period after classical antiquity. David was originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of the twelve prophets. It was replaced in its original place by a replica in 1910. In 1910, the biblical figure of David was a popular subject in Florentine art. Because of the nature of the figure depicted, the statue soon came to symbolise the defence of civil liberties, as embodied in the Constitution of the Republic of Florence of 1494.The history of the statue of David begins before Michelangelo's work...
