David was the first colossal marble sculpture to be created in the early modern period after classical antiquity. David was originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of the twelve prophets. It was replaced in its original place by a replica in 1910. In 1910, the biblical figure of David was a popular subject in Florentine art.
